Phonics Framework
Pure Sounds: Ensure sounds are pronounced cleanly without an 'uh' at the end (e.g. 'mmmm' not 'muh', 's' not 'suh'). This drastically reduces cognitive load when pupils are blending words.
Continuous vs. Short: Level 1 sounds are introduced as either continuous/stretchy (m, s, n, f, l, r, v, z, sh, th, ng) or short/bouncy (a, e, i, o, u, b, c, d, g, h, j, p, q, t, w, x, y, ch).
Sound Partners: Emphasize "Sound Partners" (two or three letters making one sound / digraphs & trigraphs) before pupils read a word. The visual 'chips' in the practice sections map these clearly.
Robot Talk: Guide pupils to sound out words using pure sounds before blending (e.g. c-a-t = cat). For pupils ready to move on, internalise this to "Robot in your head".
